His commitment to public service began in 2009 as the City Council’s LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS Liaison, where he organized grassroots campaigns for equal rights, supportive housing, and protections for LGBTQ youth. He later served as the statewide LGBTQ Community Liaison in the Governor’s Office and helped lead New York’s successful fight to legalize marriage equality. From 2015 to 2021, Erik served as Chief of Staff to City Council Speaker Corey Johnson. In this role, he gained an encyclopedic knowledge of every block of Council District 3 while providing constituent services to tens of thousands of residents.In the City Council, Erik has established a strong reputation for results. He has authored landmark mental health legislation, delivered thousands of units of affordable housing, reformed our city’s sidewalk scaffolding system, passed first-in-the-nation gun safety legislation, advanced major sanitation reforms including the city’s move toward garbage containerization, and championed sustainability initiatives such as universal composting, and the expansion of the city’s tree canopy.Erik currently serves as Co-Chair of both the Manhattan Delegation and the LGBTQIA+ Caucus. His leadership reflects a steadfast belief that policy must both meet people’s needs and affirm their dignity.Erik’s work demonstrates a central conviction. While the Trump Administration uses tax dollars to buy jets for cabinet members, forces security details to play uber for partying family members, accepts billions from foreign governments and mishandles millions in SNAP funds, the Republican led Congress is on vacation- giving up their Constitutional duty to oversee the government. Erik is sick of Republicans&nbsp;breaking every law to bow and scrape before a corrupt fascist, and sick of the Democrats who let them do it, and decline to fight.&nbsp; The moment we are facing calls for something more than normal solutions. Our current laws have simply not worked and a new generation of lawmakers need to bring ideas to the table that ensure sturdier guardrails that offer real clarity, enforcement and transparency.&nbsp; All three branches of government are propping up a broken system that has enabled a historic level of corruption unseen in the United States. In Congress, Erik will fight to put an end to this using every available lever to #DefundDonald and turn of the spigot that enables Trump’s corruption:&nbsp; <ul><li>Call for the creation of a special oversight committee with subpoena power that will also hold hearings to spotlight the staggering level of corruption in the Trump administration and identify the individuals who enable it, agency by agency, along with the loopholes that let it proceed&nbsp;</li><li>Require hearings and subpoenas for all Federal Law Enforcement agencies including ICE and the FBI to answer for their actions under the Trump administration and calling for prosecution for any illegal actions&nbsp;</li><li>Introduce legislation to tie ICE’s hands and ensure that tax payer dollars cannot be abused to empower their campaign and fear and terror that regularly targets&nbsp; US citizens, or undocumented people and their children, who have committed no crime</li><li>Work with House Leadership to begin hearings with the Government Oversight Committee to recover the billions of missing tax dollars from SNAP, DOGE and other Executive Branch agencies&nbsp;</li><li>Introduce legislation to increase and strengthen penalties which ensure that Presidents, their cabinets, and their families cannot prosper off of government positions or proximity, including barring no-bid contracts, barring the federal government from owning or investing in companies or corporations with any financial stake held by officials or their families; or pursuing or closing business deals with foreign nations</li><li>Stop the Trump Administration from making structural changes to any federal buildings without Congressional approval and oversight. No more Billionaire Ballrooms in the People’s House</li></ul>

The American people recognize and appreciate dedicated public servants and the best public servants are those who can bring different life experiences, diverse agendas and change and energy to Washington.&nbsp;But too many Members of Congress have spent the majority of their lives in the halls of Washington. They don't know what it's like to live paycheck to paycheck, to run a business, to teach in our schools or protect our communities. Instead, we have career politicians who have turned being an elected official into a lifelong career - this must change. Republicans are corrupt enablers of Donald Trump - but Democrats get their lunch money taken.&nbsp;On Day One of the 120th Congress, Erik will introduce a package of bills to establish term limits for all Members of Congress serving in the House and Senate, and for Supreme Court Justices. No more lifetime jobs.&nbsp;By term limiting all members of the legislative and judicial bodies new leaders will have the opportunity to step up and shape the future while ensuring institutional knowledge is able to pass on. If Supreme Court Justices were limited to 18&nbsp; years, Clarence Thomas would have left the court in 2009, Antonin Scalia in 2005 , and Anthony Kennedy in 2006. How different would our world be without Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Brent Kavanaugh on the bench? <h2>Erik's Term Limit Proposal:&nbsp;</h2><h3>Six terms in the House and two terms in the Senate&nbsp;</h3><h3>18 year lifetime maximum for Supreme Court Justices with automatic retirement at 70</h3>Congress must be an energetic, prepared, lively, innovative, body for debate, with (hopefully healthy) disagreement and results. It should not be a nursing home, a place to phone it in, or live out the golden years.&nbsp;Seven Democrats have died in office over the past two years; most were in their late seventies and eighties; several actually ran while they were battling terminal illnesses. In fact, Donald Trump’s so-called Big Beautiful Bill, had the votes in the House to squeak by because of empty seats caused by Democrats’ deaths. Scores of other members stay way past their prime. Voters are furious, and so is Erik. Not acceptable. And a thing of the past, if Erik has his way. Erik views term limits as deeply connected to his broader agenda. If Democrats are listless, aged-out, and stuck in the old ways of thinking and doing business, that fails to deliver for everyday Americans – we will continue to lack the energy to stand up, fight Donald Trump, and win on other priorities in his agenda

Term Limits

Few public figures are as open about their personal struggles with mental health as Erik is.&nbsp;&nbsp;As a young, isolated gay teen growing up alone deep in conservative rural America, Erik spent a month in a mental institution after trying to take his own life five times, and is only here today because his parents understood the danger of having a firearm in the home.Across the country, we face a mental health care system on the precipice of collapse. Lack of providers, especially for adolescents, leaves many families using emergency rooms to treat mental health conditions. Over 28 million adults report struggling with their mental health and not having access to care. In the United States, one person losses their life to suicide every 11 minutes- our country must do better.&nbsp;In public life representing the West Side of Manhattan, Erik sees every day how terribly the country has bungled a mental health crisis that’s left millions of families devastated and lives stunted in despair. Furthermore, Erik acknowledges the intersections of substance abuse disorder and access to firearms creating dangerous crossroads for Americans who need help. He knows it doesn’t have to be this way, and that it’s crucial to extend access to services where people in crisis are.&nbsp;Through innovative legislation, Erik has already opened mental health services to thousands in need at schools, community centers, public housing, shelters and supportive housing, clinics and houses of worship. Erik knows we can harness the federal system to do that on a much bigger scale and deliver relief to millions and cut costs, strengthen families and improve outcomes by making smart, evidence-based investments in real mental health services.&nbsp;As your Congressman, Erik will:&nbsp;<ul><li>Provide funding to expand access to mental health treatment across the district especially for adolescents and members of the LGBTQIA+ community who are 2.5 times more likely to experience depression, anxiety and substance misuse disorders&nbsp;</li><li>Fight for insurance coverage of mental health treatment by private providers including for individuals under 18&nbsp;</li><li>Increase grant and scholarship opportunities for students pursuing degrees in mental health services&nbsp;</li><li>Expand substance abuse disorder treatment options from Naloxone accessibility to inpatient care centers&nbsp;</li><li>Lead the fight for a national Red Flag Law, allowing law enforcement, medical professionals and social workers to help our nation reduce gun violence and suicide deaths by removing firearms from homes where individuals are deemed a harm to themselves or others&nbsp;</li></ul>

Over decades our country has bungled a mental health crisis. Few public figures are as open about their personal struggles with mental health as Erik is and he knows how we can harness the federal system to do so much more.

ERIK BOTTCHER RELEASES POLICY AGENDA GUIDING HIS RACE FOR CONGRESS

The number one issue for the majority of Americans is the cost of living. Over 50% of Americans are cost burdened by rent. Childcare and healthcare costs have risen over 40% since 2017. Grocery costs have increased over 30% since covid. Yet the federal minimum wage is still $7.25 and corporations continue price gauging practices across industries without any government oversight as millions live paycheck to paycheck.&nbsp;Erik understands what families in NY-12 and across the nation are experiencing. He is actually from a middle-class background, grew up in a family that owned a small business and is not an insider, a rich kid, or made bank and cashed out in the private sector.&nbsp;As a Councilmember, Erik has fought to make New York a better and more affordable place by building thousands of units of affordable housing, increasing childcare tax credits and vouchers for city residents, and in Congress he will continue that work.&nbsp;Everyone else will talk about it, but Erik is the only candidate in the race who has done the work to make our district more affordable and has a plan to tackle the affordability crisis and deliver relief for the American people, like he has in the city council:&nbsp;<ul><li>Introduce legislation to end corporate price gouging of consumer goods and introduce penalties for corporations found liable for conspiring to inflate prices across industries</li><li>Secure funding for historic levels of&nbsp;affordable housing in NYC, expanded grants for homebuyers, and lower interest rates for first time home buyers to turn more renters into homeowners&nbsp;</li><li>Fight for legislation to move our nation to a medicare for all system and also eliminate medical debt for families making less than $125,000 a year because Erik believes healthcare is a human right and one healthcare tragedy should not bankrupt a family.</li><li>Use community grants to increase childcare options in the district and support increases to the childcare tax credit while fighting for a national standard of universal childcare</li><li>Reach across the aisle to eliminate the SALT cap that penalizes New Yorkers and takes thousands of dollars out of our pockets.</li></ul>

Erik understands what families in NY-12 and across the nation are experiencing and has fought to make New York a better and more affordable place. In Congress he is ready to keep doing more.
